George IV Bridge

The Business 40 bridge over Salem Avenue and Research Parkway is now officially the George Hamilton IV Bridge, honoring the late Winston-Salem native and country music star.
The N.C. Department of Transportation dedicated the bridge on Hamilton’s 79th birthday.
About 100 people gathered for the dedication ceremony, among them, 15 members of Hamilton’s family.
Hamilton, 77, died on Sept. 17, 2014, at a hospital in Nashville, Tenn., after suffering a heart attack.
“My dad always did build bridges,” said his son, Peyton Hamilton. “He was a trendsetter. He was a rockabilly (performer) before he was a country music star. He went country before it was cool. Dad was always a step ahead, but he marched to a different drummer.”
