Tammy's widower died secretly

The death of Tammy Wynette's widower, George Richey, was reported Monday (Aug. 16). The Arkansas native, who died July 31 at age 74 following a lengthy illness, had requested there be no public memorial service or an announcement of his death, according to Nashville's daily newspaper, The Tennesseean. He was buried near Wynette at Nashville's Woodlawn Memorial Park. Richey and Wynette married in 1978 and remained together until her death in 1998. He remarried in 2001. Richey served as Wynette's manager during the '80s and is credited with co-writing two of her No. 1 hits, "'Til I Can Make It on My Own" and "You and Me." Richey also co-wrote George Jones' "A Picture of Me (Without You)" and several of the duets Wynette recorded with Jones, such as "Southern California," "We Loved It Away," "(Let's Get Together) One Last Time" and "Let's Build a World Together." In addition to his accomplishments as a songwriter and manager, Richey also worked as a record producer and session musician. He assisted the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to assemble an exhibit, Tammy Wynette: First Lady of Country Music, which opens Friday (Aug. 20).
